Earth Composition Lab
Background: The earth is made up of several layers, the crust, the mantle and the core. However, is it possible to prove that structure, without actually being able to see it? The purpose of this lab is to mathematically establish the layered internal structure of the earth. For this purpose scientists use data from earthquake. This lab makes use of p-wave arrival times to establish proof of a layered earth. Objective: Occam’s razor is the selection of the simplest solution to be the truth in case of two options being present. The objective of this lab is to use Occam’s Razor to compare two options and to see if the simplest one actually is true. Option 1 : The earth is actually non-homogeneous and is composed of multiple layers of various densities, physical and chemical properties and is quite complex, Option 2: The earth is simply structured and is uniform and homogeneous. Procedure: In every lab group a team of seismologists will look at actual earthquake data from Haiti and graph distance from epicenter vs p-wave arrival times. In every lab group a team of theoreticians will use a scale model of the earth and graph distance from epicenter vs p-wave arrival times assuming a uniform velocity for p-waves ( 11 Km/s) Data: Seismologists : Include data table here Theoreticians : Include data table here Analysis: Every lab group will study the two graphs and compare the trends. If the earth is uniform, both graphs should have similar trends. If not, the hypothesis of a complex, multi-layered earth is true.
