Answer all the questions in complete sentences. Label all graphs and for any math problem show given, required and then your solutions. Be careful of units!
1. Define system and surrounding. How does heat transfer inside a glass of lemonade with ice cubes in it? Draw a picture. 2. What are exothermic and endothermic reactions? How can you remember which way the energy flows through the word roots? 3. What is enthalpy? What is the sign convention for enthalpy? 4. What is thermochemistry a study of? 5. Explain if the following are endothermic or exothermic processes. Describe which way the energy flows in terms of system and surrounding.
6. State the second law of thermodynamics in two different ways! ( In terms of heat flow and entropy). 7. Calculate the specific heat of Iron when a sample weighing 38 g absorbed 500 J of total thermal energy with a corresponding temperature increase of 29.3 degrees Celsius. 8. A catalyzed decomposition of Hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen produces a hot foam. Is the chemical reaction exothermic or endothermic? 9. What is a reversible reaction? Write down the equation for the Haber Process for manufacturing Ammonia. Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic? Draw and label an energy diagram. 10. Define specific heat. Why do we multiply it by mass and temp. Change to get total heat ?
